Spain – Coast and Marine Conservation in Denia – Images

Denia is situated along the Mediterranean Sea, between the cities of Valencia and Alicante, and is known to be one of the most beautiful port towns in Spain. With over 20 kilometers of beach and a variety of water sports and activities available, Denia is the perfect destination for those who want to relax and soak up the sun and ideal for those who love to dive, windsurf and sail. One amazing site in Denia is the famous 11th century castle located on a rocky crag that overlooks the city, as well as the Archeological and Ethnological museums. Whether you want to wander through the picturesque streets, savor the fresh fish from a local restaurant or attend the traditional fiestas, including the Bull Run, Denia is definitely a worthwhile place to visit.

While participating in this project, you will contribute to important conservation and marine research. Depending on the weather conditions your work will either take place on a boat, in the water or on the coast. Volunteers will discover the unique flora and fauna of Montgo Nature Park, which rises over 700 meters above sea level and encompasses over 5,000 acres around Montgo Mountain. Running parallel to the coastline, the park has an extraordinary wealth of wildlife and vegetation, including over 650 vegetable species, such as the red lavender and maritime fennel. The reserve is teeming with native bird species, including yellow legged seagulls or royal owls, and other various animals, from reptiles to amphibians to small mammals, like rabbits and foxes. You can also enjoy various hiking trails with marvelous views of both mountain and sea.

In recent years, the heavy flow of park visitors has had a negative effect on the delicate coastal and marine ecosystems. This program aims to protect the fragile coastline and marine ecosystems in Montgo Nature Park, while also educating volunteers on how to preserve and revitalize the fragile environment.

Some of your tasks may include:

• Monitoring whales, dolphins, turtles, and seabirds
• Data collection and surveys on coastal flora and fauna
• Improving and repairing wetland ecosystems
• Collecting trash along the coast
• Reforestation and forest fire prevention
• Accurately identifying targeted species
• Helping with the logistical operations

Please note that some of these activities are only possible during specific times of the year or under certain weather conditions.

A typical day: Your day will start at 8:00 AM as you head out to the coast to conduct biodiversity surveys or collect data. After lunch you will collect trash along the coast or spend time monitoring and observing wildlife. For the rest of the day you will have time to relax, go to the beach, explore the city, play sports or try the local cuisine.

Volunteers will work from Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM-1:00 PM and will normally have the weekends free to explore the beautiful surrounding area or travel to nearby cities.

Internet: Free Internet access is provided.

Laundry: Free access to a washing machine is provided.

Accommodations: Volunteers are provided with a single room within a shared apartment. Each apartment accommodates up to six people. For an additional fee, there is an option to live with a host family with half-board (breakfast and dinner). It is possible to upgrade following registration. 16-year olds must upgrade to the homestay for an additional fee .

Food: Not included with the apartment accommodations, but you will have access to a fully equipped kitchen. Volunteers who upgrade to a home-stay (for an additional fee) will receive breakfasts and dinners.

Please take note of this project’s minimum requirements:

• Minimum age of 18
• Good level of English
• Basic level of Spanish is recommended
• Physically fit and prepared to work outside on a daily basis

If you are looking to explore outside Denia, you can hop on a ferry to Ibiza and experience one of Spain’s favorite nightlife islands. Ibiza boasts more than 160 kilometers of coastline with over 50 beaches, plus plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs. Step off the beaten path and pay a visit to the old town of Dalt Vila, which provides wonderful panoramic views of the city and a wealth of history that spans over 2,500 years.

For a taste of the big city, be sure to visit Valencia. Valencia is filled with historical attractions, such as the famous Serranos Towers and intricate architecture, like Palacio del Marques de Dos Aguas.

Learning Spanish in Valencia:
Participants that don’t know Spanish or wish to brush up on their language skills have the opportunity to sign up for a Spanish course, before or after your volunteer project. You also have the option to take private lessons.
