Peru, known for its incredible cultural heritage sites, such as the renowned Machu Picchu, is the third largest country in South America. Peru is geographically diverse, with a variety of landscapes, climates, and ecosystems. This makes it possible to go surfing at its northern beaches one day, and hiking in its vast mountains the next.

The volunteer project is in Shaullio Grande, a rural community near the northern Andes city of Cajamarca, known for its natural thermal springs, breathtaking mountain views and relaxing atmosphere. The location provides the best of both worlds with its proximity to both natural wonders such as the Andes Mountains and Amazon Rainforest, and the bustling commercial center of Cajamarca. There is also a rich Incan history to explore, as the city is known for the Battle of Cajamarca, where the Inca Empire fell.

As a volunteer, you will join our private after-school program to provide free lessons for children from remote communities! Its focus is not to intervene with the Peruvian school system, yet to provide free educational enrichment in the afternoons. After public school finishes, children attend one of two sessions to complete their homework or improve their English, Math, and Reading skills. Our local team of teachers will help prepare the lessons so you may teach solo or with other international volunteers as a team. You may also teach basic hygiene and painting skills, as well as sharing your own experiences and cultural background. The kids are eager to learn and appreciate those who can assist them with their educational development.

The program runs with around three groups for primary school and kindergarten students.

  • Group 1: ages 7 to 9/10; from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
  • Group 2: ages 10/11 to 12; from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
  • Group 3: ages 5-6; from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
Currently, there are around 10 students per class, this may change in the future.

You can expect to volunteer for 4 hours a day from Monday to Friday. A typical day may look like this:

  • Breakfast
  • Free time
  • Lunch
  • Teaching experience at Shaullio Green Way School (from 2:00 to 6:00 pm) **
  • Dinner
