Peru, known for its incredible cultural heritage sites, such as the renowned Machu Picchu, is the third largest country in South America. Peru is geographically diverse, with a variety of landscapes, climates and ecosystems. This makes it possible to go surfing at its northern beaches one day, and hiking in its vast mountains the next.
This project is located in Los Baños del Inca, a quiet location near the northern Andes city of Cajamarca, known for its natural thermal springs, breathtaking mountain views and relaxing atmosphere. The location provides the best of both worlds with its proximity to both natural wonders such as the Andes Mountains and Amazon Rainforest, and the bustling commercial center of Cajamarca. There is also a rich Incan history to explore, as the city is known for the Battle of Cajamarca where the Inca Empire fell.
The main goal of the project is to promote the ideal that young generations are the most determinative factor for the future growth of a nation. This kindergarten provides English language exposure and cultural exchange opportunities as a means of broadening the children’s horizons. The project also aids in providing support and assistance to the kindergarten teachers who are faced with large classes and administrative work. Speaking English is an invaluable skill that opens the door to future prospects and opportunities. This kindergarten aims to start teaching English at a young age, between 2-four years old, so they too will have a better chance to succeed in their future careers.
As a volunteer on this project, you will directly partake in the day-to-day operations of the kindergarten. Volunteers will mainly work out of a public kindergarden 2-minutes walking distance from the accommodation (though based on local need, there is a chance you may be assigned to another local kindergarten). Your primary task is to communicate in English with the children and try to teach them English in a fun and practical way. Most of your volunteer work will take place in the morning; however, you may also have to assist with classes in the afternoon. Additional tasks will include:
A typical day: After breakfast, you will go to the kindergarten to play with the children and teach English from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm. Afterwards, you’ll head back to the accommodations for lunch at 12:45 pm. During the afternoon, you’ll have time to prepare lessons and materials for the following day. After dinner, you’ll have free time to relax and rest. Saturdays and Sundays are yours to spend as you wish.
Holidays: During school holidays, volunteering will take place in the form of an English teaching holiday program outside of the normal school.
The school holidays are as follows
Volunteer work does not take place during national holidays, but you are always welcome to join in the local celebration.
Please note these consecutive holidays, which may impact short-term placements, before registering:

You can extend your stay with one or more great travel extras for an additional fee. Choose from one or more of the following and sign up upon registration.
Culture Week (Highly Recommended): This program provides a comprehensive introduction to South American culture, the Cajamarca region, and the traditions and customs of Northern Peru. If you join this add-on, you’ll get to visit some of the highlights of Northern Peru, in addition to learning some basic Spanish, trying some typical Peruvian dishes and experiencing the local culture.
Spanish Classes: Whether you’re starting from scratch or just looking to brush up on your skills, this add-on is a great way to make the most of your volunteer experience. Classes are 20 hours per week, with a maximum of six students per class. Afternoon conversation classes are also offered for those who wish to further their Spanish in a more informal setting.
