This road trip takes you from the rolling hills of Limuru to the savannah-esque landscape of the Maasai Mara National Reserve and the white sand of Diani Beach. Although small in size for an African country, Kenya has a diverse terrain: national parks and reserves, snowy mountains, dry deserts and tropical beaches. Nairobi, the capital, is the largest city in the country. The Maasai Mara is known as one of Africa’s finest safari destinations, most famous for its annual wildebeest and zebra migration, which has been called “the greatest wildlife show on earth.” This area has one of the highest densities of carnivores in Africa, as well as a wide range of endangered species. Kenya itself is located on the equator on the eastern coast of Africa, boasting a range of ethnicities and cultural vibrancy.
The first week of this road trip is dedicated to volunteer work. Participants will volunteer at a local school (either a preschool or primary school)assisting with educational and extracurricular activities. Participants will also help by giving the students individual attention, particularly during homework revision. Participants will also assist in the afternoons at a Reading Club.
On Day 4, volunteers will work with community members who have physical challenges, including disabilities and those who have been affected by HIV.
Internet: There is WiFi available at the cottage, and it may be available at the hostel for an additional fee. There is no Internet available at the tents.
Laundry: Laundry can be done at the hostel.
Accommodations: While volunteering during the first week, participants will be staying in shared rooms in a cottage in Limuru. Here, participants can play volleyball and tennis right outside or stroll through the nearby forest. Participants will share tents in the Maasai Mara and will share dormitory-style rooms in a hostel while at the beach. Participants may upgrade to a private room in the hostel for an additional fee.
Food: All meals will be provided on Days 1-10. There is a chef at the cottage and in the Maasai Mara Reserve that will prepare the meals. Meals on Days 11-14 are not included. There is a restaurant at the beach hostel where participants can buy food, and different diets can be accommodated.
